Brian Livingston has a wonderful article in his latest Windows Secrets Newsletter entitled Firefox 1.0 Secrets, which describes some changes you can make to your Firefox installation that will gain you noticeable performance improvements. This is pretty amazing, since Firefox is already by far the fastest browser available, but these tweaks are well worth the time it takes to put them into place.
