Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Talks About New Privacy Controls (Live Blog on RWW)
From a Q&A session after Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg announced their revamped privacy controls:
Q (Liz Gaines from GigaOm): Can you give us some more context about how this outcry against the privacy changes compares to earlier changes? Did people leave the site? A (Zuckerberg): Newsfeed was the biggest backlash Facebook ever faced (“There were people protesting outside of our offices”). Now, a lot more people are tracking these issues. We now have 500 million people using our service. Only a small percentage of people are upset, but that’s still more people than live in the state of New York. When we did Newsfeed, we were a lot smaller.
Earlier, he also said “We have seen no meaningful uptick in the number of people who deleted their accounts.” As someone who deactivated my account, I have to think that the number was meaningful enough to cause this even to take place.
The population of New York State seems like a meaningful number, at least.
