For those of you in Vancouver, come check out my old band The Molestics at The Railway Club tonight. I don’t play much anymore – in fact, I haven’t played since the last time the guys were in town about a year ago, but it’s fun to dust off the bass every once in awhile.
For anyone actually considering coming, you should know that the Molestics play a style of music that can best be described as “in-your-face 20′s and 30′s jazz”. There’s a lot of styles of music that we cover – everything from swing and calypso to a cover of “The Wizard” by Black Sabbath. (seriously – I shit you not!) Considering we consist of drums, acoustic bass, guitar, tenor saxophone and trumpet, this makes for an interesting exercise.
I suppose the best way to describe the Molestics is as a “drinking band”. The crowd drinks, we drink, people dance, and everyone has fun. Come on out.
[UPDATED]
WHOA! I just found a Molestics website on the intarweb. Crazy!! They even have a music samples page, which has quite a bit worth listening to. I’m on the most recent recordings, “Fun”, and “Whitehorse Blues”.

Wow, I love hearing that people are still listening to the Molestics! Unfortunately, the band is slowly fading from existence, aside from the odd gig here and there. The core of the band is Mike and Sam, and with Sam living in Toronto, that puts a pretty big kink in the band’s schedule.
Oh well, stay Free Like a Rock! I’ll keep wearing my plutonium shithat.

Hey, enjoyed seeing the molestics years ago, haven’t they been broken up for a long time? and also, isn’t Mike (drunkard lead singer) living in Winnipeg now? Cool town. Terry

To be honest, I have a hard time keeping it all straight. Yes, I think you’re right that he’s in Winnipeg now, although he’s been back and forth a few times. I have more contact with Sam, and it’s easy to remember where he is.
In the past couple of years when they’ve come to town, it’s been really fun, but I miss Waylen. He’s the very kick-ass piano player we had when the band was a full six-piece. He’s now (if I’ve got everything straight this time) engaged to Sam’s sister back in T.O.
How cool is that?

Hey there Jason.
Just thought I’d add a bit of the truth. Mike is in fact in Winnipeg. Sam and I play occasionally here in Toronto but I think the Molestics is nearly entirely extinct. We did a series of shows here that pushed the boundaries of decency. We missed you here, too. Not as many bass players here as you might suspect. So few, in fact, that Sam plays bass now in a country band called The Backstabbers.
I always thought you should have come to TO instead of turning back at Winnipeg. Thus is the story of this band.
later, waylen.

Talked to Bob (roadie for DOA) and the boys in NoMeansNo, who told me the band has broken up, and will never be back together again. We’ll miss you guys here in the states.
