You know what sucks? UFC. Ultimate Fighting Championships.

It’s not a popular opinion, particularly among males my age, but personally I think it takes more balls to publicly proclaim that I think UFC sucks than it does to be a raving fanboy of violence as sport.

Now, of course, I must admit what at first blush might seem like a hypocrisy: I’m a hockey fan. I know a lot of people that won’t let their children watch hockey because it’s too violent. To be honest, I ask my kids not to watch the fights, but we certainly enjoy a solid check into the boards.

So how can I be a fan of a sometimes violent sport like hockey, and think that UFC is for knuckle-dragging morons? Easy. Hockey is a sport that happens to have some violence in it, and without the violence it would be just as entertaining and enjoyable. Most people agree that the hockey played at the recent Winter Olympics in Vancouver was among the best and most entertaining hockey played anywhere. Did you notice anything else? That’s right: no fighting.

UFC celebrates all that is base and undesirable in our society — everything that we’ve been working to eliminate. It’s pure brutality for entertainment’s sake. Have we not evolved since the days of gladiators in ancient Rome? Apparently, not.

And that makes me sad.
