Software, Hockey, and random ramblings.

Check out these two videos of young kids playing xylophones incredibly well.
I’m going to force my child to play some random, lesser-known instrument incredibly well by the age of 3. Hmm, maybe the acoustic bass?

Can you imagine spending 2 years on a ten minute movie? I can’t, but Liam Kemp can. He created This Wonderful Life, a completely computer generated movie on his 1.4 Ghz computer at home, then bought 3 more machines to render it.
Watching the main character’s expressions is nothing short of breathtaking - there are times when you can completely forget that she is completely computer generated.

Check out this video of the Umbilical Brothers, a pair of performers from Australia. The video clip has two acts, the first one performed on Jay Leno, and the second on David Letterman. Both are very different, and quite amazing.

View this video of a car simulator (Windows Media link) - this thing will blow your mind! It’s a platform that the driver sits on that is on hydraulics about 10 feet in the air, and it moves around significantly in response to the driver’s actions on the simulator. Oh, and I should also mention the three huge flat-screen monitors.
I want one, bad. BAD. REAL BAD. ![]()

Check out InstaSnow, another “if you’re trying to find the perfect present for me” type of product. Totally useless (as far as I can tell), but incredibly cool, nonetheless. Here’s the main page that has links to different video files of different formats showing a demonstration of the stuff, as well as links for more information about it, and here’s a direct link to the high-quality Windows Media version of the video.

If you are a proud Canadian, like me, you will enjoy these video clips taken from Rick Mercer’s “Talking to Americans” series, in which he poses facetious questions to notable Americans, to see what kind of reactions he can get.
Personally, I think this is the best TV Canada has ever produced, aside from any televised hockey game.

This kicks SO MUCH ASS! As a kid, I was a die-hard Lego fan. I still have a huge box of Lego somewhere (I think under my parents’ house) just waiting for my son Josh to get old enough to use it. Of course I’ll have to “help” him, and try to refrain from stealing all the good pieces when I do so. Ahem. Anyway, check out this Lego robot someone built that can solve a Rubik’s Cube. If that isn’t cool, I don’t know what is.

In this case, a really small helicopter. This is so amazing it almost doesn’t look real, but I think it is. Check out what this guy can do with his remote control helicopter. Makes me want one!

No matter how bad your morning is, it can’t compare to what these people went through, when their helicopter began to spin out of control and landed hard (to understate it considerably) in New York while covering a shooting. Must be seen to be understood.
