Inspector Gadget theme - beatboxing on a flute

Before watching this video, if you’d have told me that I was going to see a guy playing the flute and it was going to be cool, I’d have laughed in your face. I’m not much of a fan of the flute. This guy, however, has surprised me. Make sure to watch the whole thing, as it gets better as he goes.

This bass player is my hero

I liked to think that when I played acoustic bass with the Molestics, I was pretty animated on stage. Of course, I wish I’d seen this video clip - it sets a whole new standard for the term “animated bass player”. Plus, what’s not to like about an all female marimba band?

The Band The Music Industry Doesn’t Want You To Know About: The Kleptones

I kept hearing references to the Kleptones in different blogs I read, but when John Battelle posted about them, I thought it’s time to check them out. I was hesitant at first, since they are a “mashup” or remix band, and their music is in fact illegal. My understanding is that they don’t have the rights to use the samples they’re using, so they can’t get a record contract.

For some reason, I thought that this would mean their music would be somehow less than professional. Boy, how wrong can you be? I seriously recommend you check this out. Don’t let the title A Night at the Hip-Hopera scare you away, if you’re not a hip-hop fan. These guys pull from so many cool musical places that you will be entertained.

Art like this just underscores the fact that our copyright laws are seriously flawed.

Check out the Kleptones site, or download their album from one of the sites listed here as hosting it.

I’ve Got a Gig With The Molestics Tonight

For those of you in Vancouver, come check out my old band The Molestics at The Railway Club tonight. I don’t play much anymore - in fact, I haven’t played since the last time the guys were in town about a year ago, but it’s fun to dust off the bass every once in awhile.

For anyone actually considering coming, you should know that the Molestics play a style of music that can best be described as “in-your-face 20’s and 30’s jazz”. There’s a lot of styles of music that we cover - everything from swing and calypso to a cover of “The Wizard” by Black Sabbath. (seriously - I shit you not!) Considering we consist of drums, acoustic bass, guitar, tenor saxophone and trumpet, this makes for an interesting exercise.

I suppose the best way to describe the Molestics is as a “drinking band”. The crowd drinks, we drink, people dance, and everyone has fun. Come on out.

[UPDATED]

WHOA! I just found a Molestics website on the intarweb. Crazy!! They even have a music samples page, which has quite a bit worth listening to. I’m on the most recent recordings, “Fun”, and “Whitehorse Blues”.

Cool Upright Bass

Accordion Guy posted a picture he took of a very cool looking black upright bass with a skull for a headstock. I’d never do this to my bass, and I don’t think I’d ever be caught dead playing one that looked like this, but it’s cool anyhow.
