My Most Popular Post – Eye Twitch?

A few weeks ago I installed a WordPress plugin that will list the most popular posts on your blog based on post views. The numbers it reports are as of the time it was installed. My most popular post was one I almost didn’t write. I was experiencing an eye twitch for a prolonged period of time, and I felt the need to vent about it a little bit. As it turns out, in the past three weeks, that post has been viewed more than 1380 times, which is more than double that of my next most popular post. The Eye Twitch post also has 128 comments on it as of the time I write this, which is far more than any other post here.

This makes me wonder if there’s a real need for people with eye twitches to have a site that would allow for a community to thrive where people can support one another and help to collect information about this affliction. Since I really have no desire for this blog to become a touchstone for the eye twitch community, it makes sense to try to redirect the energy that is going into all of the wonderful comments on that post to a more appropriate forum. I’ll have to work on that.

What strange things we learn when we start posting personal gripes for all to see! :-)

This is so weird. I have also had and eye twitch for exactly a month today. Sometimes it twitches more on any particular day. It also went away for a couple of days but it return soon after. My doctor said it could be stressed, Ireally don’t think is stress but I’m going to give it acouple more weeks. I also went to see an eye doctor all he said was that my eyes were a little dry an dto use eye drops when needed. Hopefully everybodies eye stop twitching. But it feel good that I’m not the only person. Take Care. God Bless

My eye has been twitching for about 3 days now. All the places I look say its tired eyes or stress. Well the only thing that stresses me is the freakin twitchy eye! I just know everyone can see it and they wonder what the heck is wrong with me – I wonder too! Can’t wait for it to stop…….

Been searching around for information and found your site after visiting the stress, diet, caffeine etc sites. I’ve had a twitch now for about 6 weeks that just seems to happen constantly. My personal opinion at the moment is stress and lack of sleep (particulary troublesome post Christmas 4 year old!) which I’m starting to get on top of but very interesed in the chiropractor information at the top. Anyway – that isn’t the reason for the post. I’ve noticed in most of the posts that the twitch happens in the right eye, I know there are some in the left, but generally people seem to be mentioning the right eye and usually the lower eylid. Just an observation that might be of use somewhere down the line. Perhaps you could setup a poll? Good luck fellow twitchers.

  • Mike Says:

Not sure if this is much use but just seems to be that most posts are mentioning the lower right eyelid as being the main trouble spot. Just thought this might be of some use further down the line. Perhaps you could setup a poll? Good luck all. ps. been in the twitchers club for about 6 weeks now

I’ve posted here before, about a year ago (tax time). After over 2 months the twitch in my lower left eye went away for the most part. Now, at tax time again, it has returned! Now it is in my upper left eye and I am feeling it even to the side of my nose. Almost makes that part of my face feel numb. AND in the last couple of days, the upper right corner of my lip has starting twitching! I swear, once you get it for a prolonged period, you become more and more vulnerable. I’m hoping it will virtually disappear too like last years, we will see. Good luck to all!

Is there a distinction between locations for the eye twitch ? Mine is always the lower right. It’s been for over a year. Will try the usual suggested remidies. Thanks for the e-forum!

  • Susan Says:

I have had a upper eyelid twitching since October of 2007. It happened right after I got my new bi-focals. After a few days of wearing them I took them back in to say I was having problems in my right eye. They discovered that the prescription had my eye looking off to the right and not focussing in the center. Months later I was still having problems with upper eyelid twitching, distance was getting blurry and my eye was watering. I went into a medical eye doctor who diagnossed it as “fasciculation” not the blepspasm as my family doctor said it was. I was told to use a warm/cold wash cloth and natural tears for dry eye. Well I decided to try my old prescription that aren’t bi-focals and I have noticed an improvement in my distance and the twitching is almost gone or only once a twice a day,not like several times a day. It would happen if I sneezed, rubbed my eyelid to put on eyecream, etc. So for now I am going to not use my bi-focals and use my older prescription and if it improves after all this time I am going back in to the place I got my glasses from and have them checked again. Hope this helps others….

    Thank you Susan.

  • Lillie Omalley Says:

Well this is comforting and Terry on December 12 describes to a “t” my problem. It has been three weeks, non stop, I fell almost three weeks ago and landed on my back….I’m wondering if the fall is connected to the twitching like he/she indicated. I’m heading to a chiropractor as my back and arm I caught myself with hasn’t been right since. My twitch is also under my left eye…I’ve had twitching above the eyelid, but never in the BAG area like I do with this. Thanks for the site info.

Hey Eyelid Twitchers! My bottom right lid has been twitching for 2 weeks now on and off. Not too worried about it (yet!) but Googled ‘eyelid twitching’ and ended up here. I think we’re all going to live guys… just get some sleep, chill out and do some yoga….! Take care.

  • Dominic Says:

My eye started twitching about a month and half ago. Three weeks after my eye twitching started; my left side of face begun to pull. I went to the ER and they told me it would go away within a couple of weeks, but the ER doctor referred me to a neurologist. The neurologist performed an MRI and stated I was suffering from Hemi facial Spasm–which he says is caused from a misplaced nerve/blood vessel stem near or on the cerebral part of the brain. The Dr. placed me on some medicine named Carbatrol. I am afraid to take the medicine because of all of the warnings from FDA. I have scheduled a Dr. Appointment with my family doctor for a complete physical- and blood analysis. The neurologist did not test my blood, and the medication instructions specifically states, you must have a physical before being administered this drug. After researching the web, I think the face twitching may have been caused by stress (which I am under), but also a chemical imbalance which I may have indirectly caused. I noticed that if your electrolytes are off it affects your metabolism. Thus, causing Vertigo and yes you named it Eye Twitching. I have been taking water pills for months now, and probably depleted my potassium and electrolytes. Once I speak with my doctor regarding this I will keep you posted.

Hello my twitching brothers and sisters~

I too have been experiencing an eye twitch in my lower right lid for approximately 6 weeks now. Thanks God for the previous posts…I had no idea that “eye twitching” was so common. I understand from reading the previous posts that eye twitching can be caused by stress, lack of sleep and or vitamins, and pinched nerves. I do believe that any of the above could be the cause of my twitch, but wanted to ask if anyone out there has experienced an eye twitch after taking the sleep medication, Ambien? I was given a prescription of Ambien and two days later I had this annoying twitch. I know that there is a possibility that my eye was going to begin twitching even if I hadn’t taken the Ambien, but the timing was impeccable!

    Pax~
    Your twitching sister ;)

  • J Says:

    Hey guys,

I came here after searching google for eye twitching too. Let me give some background, it might help other people figure out why they are twitching: i’ve been twitching for 2 and 1/2 weeks (feels like forever), got new glasses 3.5 weeks ago, got a new bright widescreen computer monitor 3.5 weeks ago, had extremely stressful last 3 weeks, eating healthy most of life (23 now), exercise off and on (on now for the last 4 months), I often don’t get enough sleep. My twitch is in bag area of lower left eyelid, (imagine a line between pupil and tip of nose, right there!) Twitch is almost unnoticable in mirror, and not painful but annoying, it happens for a few hours a day, almost everyday. (Also upper left eyelid was twitching too at the beginning…pretty much in same line as I mentioned before, but it after about 1 week). I think its related to combined effect of stress and (for me getting new glasses), my intensity of twitching is decreasing since the end of my stressful time).

A few things i’ve noticed, most people report stress, and lack of sleep (but not everyone), a few reported that twitching occured after getting new glassess (like me), also it seems evenly split left vs. right. In response to a poster above, here are links to chinese myths that say that left eye twitch = bad luck, right = good fortune coming, i’ve also found links that say the opposite left = fortune, right = bad ?!?

i’ve had an eye twitch in my lower left eye for four days now. It’s driving me nuts!…It’s just so twitchy. It spasms uncontrollably for about 3-4 seconds every 10 seconds or so.I keep pointing it out to people and asking if they can see it…needless to say people are starting to get annoyed.seriously if none of you had an eyetwitch how long could you stand hearing someone complain about one?Oh, and I think theres something to that pinched nerve in back causing the problem thing.my lower backs been killing me.but I also have been having bad allergies, been under stress, and sleeping only four hours a night…so any of those could be the problem too.I hope it goes away soon …I don’t don’t want to be that person with the twitchy eye..you know the “nuerotic eye twitcher” that fiction writers seem to write about alot.I’ve always thought that was funny.
    ….it’s not funny anymore:(

@ex-twitcher: it may be that you left your comment on one of the other posts on this blog that are focussed on eye twitching, including the original post that this post links to.

  • Kerry Says:

Hi there. I am a fellow twitcher also. A couple of months ago my lower right eye (in the bag area) started to twitch a few times a day and then became a constant twitch, 24/7. I thought it may be the antdepressants (amitriptyline) I started taking about 6 weeks before. I told my doc and he wanted me to take muscle relaxers which I didn’t feel comfortable doing. So I cut back on my dose of antidepressants and within a week the twitching went away. But two weeks later I ended up with a case of conjunctivitis in both my eyes. Went to the ER and they prescribed me some srops. All was fine. Now the past week and a half the twitching is back, and my right eye started becoming red and irritated again. I went out and bought some artificial tears, it helps take the redness and dry feeling away for a bit but it does nothing for the twitching. The only thing that seems to help take the twitches away for a bit is having a warm shower. It subsides for a 1-3 hours. I guess it’s time to make another doctor’s appointment to get a referral to an opthamologist or try switching antidepressants, which I dread doing. It’s too bad if it’s the meds that are causing thisa s they were helping to alleviate my depression and anxiety, the first ones that actually worked any of the SSRIs did not agree with me :S

  • ex-twitcher Says:

    @Jason,
nope, it is the same site. I put it on my favorites tab on IE and I remember many of the posts on here.

I have started th pain staking process of surgically removing my own upper eyelid(sike!!!) The eyelid twitch is that annoying. The twitch started about 3 months ago. I’ve been to my primary care (nut case) 3 neurologist, 1 chiro.
The neurologist did minor test like looked into my eye and stuck me with a pin for sensitivity. Chiro use electro theraphy for a pinch nerve on the left side of my neck . I stop because i think he was a nut and it started to hurt more. Today i went to get a CT scan of my sinus orbit. will update . I read somewhere that an infected sinus can mess with the optic nerves. Long story short my body is out of wack. They say stop stressing about my eye my primarygave me a prescription called lorazepam for anxiety and stress took that twice. Still nothing positive. The trek continues i will try an EEG test that test electrical signal from the brain. after that i will wear a pirate patch

I beat all of you…I have had my twitch in my Left eye Lower lid 4 months now. Non Stop (except when i sleep). I does this for about 8 months then stops for a while then i ll get it in the other eye and it lasts just as long. It drives me crazy. Havent seen a doctor but the Chiropractor Adjustment of the 2nd vertebrae sounds interesting. I ll try it

  • eric Says:

Have had the twitch in my eye and slight tingling in chin and upper lip for a few months. I spend a ton of time in front of the computer and I do have a very demanding job. Docs think it is stress, but SSRI’s did not agree with me AT ALL. MRI’s and Sinus CT’s have been negative. Starting to exercise more frequently and spending more time with my family…perhaps this is the best remedy:)

  • Kate Says:

Drinking Tonic water with quinine is a temporary help for me. I noticed relief after I drank only a couple of glasses full for two days. I still intend to have an evaluation for a pinched nerve by a reputable chiropractor after consult with my MD.
    Using TheraTears made it worse!
Do research on quinine (even minimal amounts in the tonic water) and how it can relieve nerve and muscle spasms. It seems that it is not how much but how regularly I take it.

  • Erin Says:

OMG, wow……. I’m so glad to know I’m not the only twitching eye person lol. I have had a twitch in the top lid of my left eye for a month and a half! I saw the Opthalmologist, and he said it should go away … it’s not completely abnormal for them to last this long. Thats all fine and great, but I HATE IT!!!!!
    Ok done venting now :(

I read similar article also named st Popular Post – Eye Twitch? : J.P.C. – Jason Clarke, and it was completely different. Personally, I agree with you more, because this article makes a little bit more sense for me

  • Nasir Says:

    Hi fellow twitchers!!!
This has been a very useful thread for me, my left eyelid has been twitching for about three weeks and was getting worse everyday.
I tried all those stress related advices, like relaxing, drinking lots of fluid, sleeping 8hrs, turning down my computer’s brightness, n God knows wat not all but nothing was working.
Then i read on this thread that it might be realted to nerve pinch coz of some neck or back pain and i have been having this neck pain for more than a couple of months. I was worried that it is due my workout at the gym or somethin.
I did not wanted to see a doctor as m not insured(i know thats bad), so i used an old home remedy.
what you do is sleep without a pillow on your back. It was quite uncomfortable the first 2 days but then on the third day my eyelid stopped twiching and its the first lovely twitch free weekend i had in a long time.
    Hope this might help….
    Cheers!!!

    Hi there everyone…….

I am 19, and in Feb / 08 I was diagnosed with Bells Palsy. I have since recovered with very little residual effects from this mysterious thing. Recently, I becan to notice that my eye (under my eye/ top of cheek) has been twitching.
I anticipate that it is just the nerves twitching, and perhaps moving & functioning still in their healing process. Does anyone have any info or comments/ advice regarding this.

    Thanks

    Hello everyone:

I think I beat all of you since my eye started twitching 7 YEARS ago and has just gotten worse! It began as a simple twitch and now the left side of the face twitches along with the eye. There are times when my left eye is completely closed especially while eating or laughing. It’s very embarrassing therefore I have stopped eating in front of even family members. I have tried the whole shbang of doctors: 2-3 diff neuros, homeopathic medicines, meditation etc..etc. Homeopathic meds have helped me but not cured it completely! I feel so tired on my left side of the face (becoz it’s twitching all day) and have started becoming a bit anti-social…anyone, please help!

    Thanks!!

  • AJJ Says:

Count me in on eye twitching. My left upper eyelid goes nuts on me about every five minutes or so. If I’m talking to someone at the time, they probably think I’m winking at them! :) Mine is probably from stress (hot weather, not getting chores done, etc.). It started about 2 weeks ago. I also use a computer all day long, which probably doesn’t help.

  • Alex Says:

I’ve had a twitch in my left eye for the past 13 months and now it has spread to the part if my nose which lies between my eyes and now, from time to time small parts of my face will twitch from time to time!! It concerns me!! Will my eyes eventually, especially my left one, permanently close if left untreated?

  • B Says:

My left eyelid twitched for a couple of weeks. I came to this site in the weekend, read about the refresh rate of the monitor, and reduced my monitor's refresh rate to 60 hz from 75 hz, and overnight my twitch disappeared. Thanks all.

  • D Says:

for about almost a month now, my eye has been twitching on and off. it also went to behind my ear, legs, back and arms. Now, it twitches more went i shut my eyes tight. Its insanely annoying i must say. I do crack my back – could this have anything to do with it? I've had people tell me it could be sinus's but i wouldn't think that would make me twitch everywhere else. if it doesn't stop in a couple weeks, i'm taking this to the doctor.

  • Jason Clarke Says:

D, the fact that the twitch has migrated away from your eye to other parts of your body makes me think you ought to go see a doctor. I'm no doctor, but that seems to be more than what other people are talking about here.

    Good luck!

  • M Says:

My right eyelid has been twitching on and off everyday for the last two weeks. I notice it does it the least in the morning, and gradually gets worse during the day, and is the worst in the evening until I go to bed. My right eye is also hurting, and I notice periodically my right ear will get a pulsating pain in it for a few seconds.

  • Tiffany Says:

I have had this eye twitch in my right eye for about 4 days now. I am an internet search freak so ofcourse I find all the bad stuff that it could be caused by. I am going to the dr tomorrow will post what I find out. Hope we can figure it out because frankly its annoying!!!!!

  • Becky Says:

Ok I thought i was the only one with this problem! LOL Ive had an eye twitch for 2 weeks now and its making me INSANE>. I read the above stuff and Im not sure if i can sit still for 15 min’s with my finger in my ear and eye closed but hey, its worth a try! LOL

    Thanks!

  • Cristina Says:

;o) Hi all! I’ve had the twitch for about a month now. I thought it was stress with a divorce and work and a new boyfriend but all that has subsided and now i’m in a very comfortable place with my relationship and with work. I’ve been all over the internet trying to get the twitch to stop (lower right eyelid). I’ve eaten bananas, taken calcium, B-12, herbal calming pills, tried relaxing more and sleeping more, I’ve done it all! So I’m gonna go to my coworkers chiropractor on Monday. I’m almost positive it is a pinched nerve. It makes complete sense. I’ve never been before so i’m a lil scared but I’ll do anything! I get botox regularly and the last time I got it I was hoping it would make the twitch stop but I guess i didn’t get it in the right spot to stop that muscle but if the chiropractor doesn’t work.. i’m going for botox. If that doesnt work i’m gonna see if I can get in a bar fight and get punched in the eye… maybe that will help??

  • Cristina Says:

    HERE’S MY FOLLOW UP:
It’s back! I went to the chiropractor and my eye twitch almost went completely away!! Then I slept wrong and now its back with a vengeance. As the chiropractor was saying, muscles have memory and will get themselves back to where they are used to being. Since my neck and back have probably been misaligned for a long time its gonna take more then one visit in order to reteach my muscles and spin where they’re supposed to be. I went back to the chiropractor today and I’m hoping that the twitching will minimize or go away completely like it did last time. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

  • Sandra Says:

Hi I stumbled on this site as I was looking for eye twitching. I was surprised to see that so many people have the same symptoms. My left eye twitches and sometimes the left side of my face as well. A few months back my speech was kind of slurred as well. My doctor said then that I had Bells Palsy and it may never come back. Hopefully not. Hopefully this is just eye twitching.

  • doc lorrie Says:

    and the answer it…chiropractic!
I stopped caffeine, made sure I got a lot of sleep and reduced my stress…took supplements, exercised, got accupuncture…..then right before I was to received botox injections….One good crack to the neck and the next day….totally gone!

  • dmep Says:

Thanks for the info. After reading through the posts I know exactly what was causing mine. I thought it was stress and lack of sleep. That is a part of it but it didn’t ring quite true for me. It wan’t until i saw the part about sinus problems that i realized what mine was. Going to see dr tomorrow for a recurring sinus infection. Thanks for the diagnosis guys.

  • lou Says:

Thanks to everyone. It really helps that no one is alone in this and everything from 8 hrs sleep to potassium intake helps a lot.

The chiro thing helps as well doc lorrie. Hope that the chiro thingy was permanent. If yes, I’ll go see one definitely.

  • Rachael Says:

I too came to this site looking to see if it was just me. I had Bell’s Palsy a few years ago. I have recurrant bouts of symptoms that are very mild compared to my original symptoms.
I have eye twitching and mild numbness in the same side in my lower lip. BP is one of those conditions that is thought to be caused by a herpes virus. Herpes Simplex 1 to be more precise. While there is no conclusive proof BP is caused by HS1, it kind of makes sense. When your immune system is compromised, the virus that is hidden within nerve cells becomes active. I believe that my BP reoccures and my eye twitches as my 7th cranial facial nerve gets compromised. I have noticed a trend of following illness or times of mental stress.
People who have ever had cold sores may or may not develope Bell’s Palsy. That doesn’t mean the virus isn’t in your nerve cells causeing eye twitches. I just thought I’d share my story and my thoughts.

I reached here for the same thing..Since 2 days my left upper lid is twitching,,Yes I don’t sleep much and was under stress.
My brother had Bypass surgery. it went well and I am relaxed..Oh one more thing. I got first time prescription glasses for reading.
    Maybe that is the cause.
I was just wondering if we all gather at one place with this twitching eyes ? ? ?

  • Nechelle Says:

Ok i am so glad I have come across this website. I have had serious left eyetwtching thats driving me NUTS. Its not the coffee im drinking. Its NOT a lack of clcium or potassium. I have figured it out. it’s the AMBIEN. I dont know why but this is a side effect of the ambien. does anyone else taking ambien experience this?

  • ERICA Says:

WELL MINE IS A DIFFERENT SITUATION. MY UPPER EYE MOVES ONLY WHEN I EAT SOMETHING. IT’S ACTUALLY HILARIOUS. BUT WHAT IS THAT CALLED? ONLY MY LEFT UPPER EYE LID DOES THAT. I ONLY SAW ONE PERSON IN MY LIFE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS ME. I HAVE HAD THAT SINCE I WAS A LITTLE GIRL.

  • joonee Says:

My left eye is twitching for 4 days and today part of my lips (on the left side), I really feel disturb but when i read the posts and the information/medication/causes it in deed help me relieved. I think a good lifestyle with a proper sleep will def help but we all have to see a doctor to make sure there’s no history of disease or troubles in our genes that eventually bother our normal lives later on.

  • Miss.M Says:

Mine has been the lower left eyelid, and sometimes the lower right eyelid. I read that it could be stress related or being excessively tired. So i’ve been sleeping more, which may have helped. Also since it’s a nerve issue i thought that maybe it could be an electrolyte imbalance or something, so i’ve been eating bananas (lol) and having electrolyte sports drinks and sodium, magnesium, calcium, multivitamins etc. I think it’s getting better… Interestingly it started when i had a nasty cold so could be something to do with just being run down.
It’s been almost two weeks and i’m pretty sure it’s starting to disappear.
    Goodluck fellow twitchers :-)

Funnily enough i’ve noticed when i’m really stressed my thumbs twitch!!!
