My Most Popular Post – Eye Twitch?

A few weeks ago I installed a WordPress plugin that will list the most popular posts on your blog based on post views. The numbers it reports are as of the time it was installed. My most popular post was one I almost didn’t write. I was experiencing an eye twitch for a prolonged period of time, and I felt the need to vent about it a little bit. As it turns out, in the past three weeks, that post has been viewed more than 1380 times, which is more than double that of my next most popular post. The Eye Twitch post also has 128 comments on it as of the time I write this, which is far more than any other post here.

This makes me wonder if there’s a real need for people with eye twitches to have a site that would allow for a community to thrive where people can support one another and help to collect information about this affliction. Since I really have no desire for this blog to become a touchstone for the eye twitch community, it makes sense to try to redirect the energy that is going into all of the wonderful comments on that post to a more appropriate forum. I’ll have to work on that.

What strange things we learn when we start posting personal gripes for all to see! :-)

  • Bob G Says:

Mine started twitching about 3 weeks ago after i sneezed really hard while driving, it felt like my eye almost popped out of its socket! Ever since then, anytime i yawn, sneeze, close my eyes tightly or rub them, its starts twitching for 5-10 seconds. It almost looks like there is some kind of animal under my eyelid that is just bugging to get out, kind of like Aliens.

  • #1 Twitcher Says:

Yea mine starts if I sneeze or if I squint really hard or yawn. Strange…and today I started to feel little tiny twitches in the muscles in my legs. Sure makes me scared that its something more serious.

  • Andrea Herrera Says:

I have had my eye twitch in the lower left eyelid, but not it’s almost down to nothing, butI wake up feeling a twitch in my upper right lip. Anyone else?

  • Sophia Says:

My twitching started a couple of weeks ago in what felt like my upper eyelid but for the last few days, it has switched to my lower right eyelid. I almost freaked out this morning when I actually saw what Bob G above described as ” some kind of animal under the eyelid that is just bugging to get out” *lol*. I have also experienced a sharp pain in the left side of my brain followed by a twitching attack. Thanks for all your comments!

I would also like to add that it is a shame that chiropractors are still being stereotyped as inefficient. I do believe that M.Ds like to put them down because chiropractors do take their business away. My chiropractor is actually a lot more knowledgeable about diseases or health in general than many doctors I have consulted in the past. I d say give them a chance, try to find a good chiropractor who can explain exactely what it is that they are trying to accomplish; that way you won t have unrealistic expectations of what they can do to help you.

  • Hard Road Help Says:

Eye twitching starts because just ONE of your Meibomian tear glands is blocked, You have 30 on each bottom eyelid ridge, 60 in all. When they open the product they produce is mostly water and *oil*. You twitch because to your nerves its uncomfortable for one to be blocked. So get a cotton wool pad, steep it in hot water and twice a day wipe your CLOSED eyelids with it. Drs say a warm compress for ten minutes is best and then a firm wipe, you can add a drop of baby shampoo. Clean the base of your eyelash area. If you do this it might prevent more glands becoming infected and closed, if they do then the twitching intensifies.

Heres what you’re not supposed to know – the twitching appears to stop, but its not cured.

2ND best tip: Take 2 teaspoons of cod liver oil per day, or flaxseed oil FOR EVER. This finds its way into your tear glands and you need it badly. Don’t grumble- do it today.

3RD BEST TIP. Restasis and Ibufron [see post 147] are anti-inflammatories, they work because they reduce the inflammation in your infected meibomian tear glands. So clean, add oil, and wipe each day.

i have had twitching eyes for at least 14 years on and off.my lids are twitching as i type.i have tried all types of vitamins ibuprofin with minimal relief.i have had days off work to hide my face from the world.i have stabed my lids with a hot needle till blood flows – believe it or not it helps. i have cut my lids with a sharp blade – this also gives temporary relief.surprisingly to me i have on scares.on my bad days the spasam will stay locked in one position and scruntch my lid up – this will imediatly be followed by eratic spasams.have been to doctors – waste of time.cyropractor – minimal help.
someone must find a cure before i go to far.cod liver oil gives minimal to no relief.

  • lolly Says:

Troy- omg..you actually stab your eye? Mine has been bad, and have thought about doing that…but can’t bring myself to. You’d think that would stop it! The only other thing you can do is but it and pull out the muscle!! joke, joke. Have you thought about the botox injection? Banana’s? Lots of water? I know..im sure most of it doesn’t help. It doesn’t help me. The furthest i’ve gone is stab my eye with the point of a paper clip at work :( didn’t really help. oh and really HOT wash cloth on the twitch..helped for about 5 minutes – then came back.

  • troy Says:

pulling out the twitching muscle has past through my mind – thats for sure :) i can picture it on the ground jumpin all about – i will need to put my foot on it and squash it into the ground to stop it – i can feel it moving under my foot. There is one thing i didnt mention on how i get relief seriusly – and i dont even like doing it and that is to smoke a joint befor i go to bed.some how this can stop it for days but i DO NOT like smoking the stuff and much prefer not to.the only solution i have after 14 years. banans, water till i bust, nerve aid, multi v,magnesium, sleeping pills, cod liver oil, ibuprofin, valerain, phenergan, calm aid, valium – all to no avail.botox i have not tried – just cant see it working.maybe one day i will try

  • JUSTIN IS NOW TROY Says:

Sorry folks, I know some of the people on this site are in a serous way with eye-nerve problems, one or two of them are either blind or functionally blind. The comments of Troy above, formerly Justin, are to be pitied. He forgets that to people who live outside the USA that he appears a “typical USA Jerk”. On the same wavelength as the 2 kids who shot up the high school for a laugh, 11 dead, or Cho, the sad Korean, 32 dead. In my country mocking the blind, or afflicated, is unheard off. One day he’ll suffer real tragedy.

  • troy Says:

after all my years of suffering, the mental torture, the sleepless nights, the people poking fun of my condition, the desperation to fix my problem i now read this. its ok though you cant afect me its already been done.your just one of many to try and bring me down – you canot. also i do not live in usa

  • Lolly Says:

Troy – where is your twitch? Mine’s either RIGHT on the line of the eye lid or right under my eyebrow! I hate it! Lately it’s only been happening when I sneeze or when I squeeze my eyes shut real hard..and it only stays for a couple of seconds, but even then…it’s STILL ANNOYING!
Let me know if you pull our your muscle – you should talk to a doctor about it..I wonder if you REALLY need that LITTLE muscle…if it’s really that major to have…hmmmm – maybe i’ll perform surgery tonight…

  • troy Says:

Lolly hopefully you could tell i was joking about pulling it out.the truth is i get the twitch in top and bottom lids at usually different times but sometimes they all go.i get them where you mentioned plus other areas.its just been so long and im so frustrated.

  • Lolly Says:

I would hope you were kidding about pulling it out! I dont even think that’s possible…what has your doctor said? What is yours caused from? Do you know? I think mines caused from lack of sleep, plus I take sleeping pills sometimes, which I firmly believe affects the nervous system in a negative way…

  • troy Says:

I have heard many reasons why i have this problem – from lack of vitamins to over active adrenalin gland. but what i believe is it is somehow relaited to my food allergies – i have just found a site called thiscure works.com and i am going to buy the e book.till then i dont know the full details but it seems to refer to an extended dtox program.but i do agree with you lolly cause if i sleep for 12 hours – which is a big sleep the spasams are much less than if i get 7 or 8 hours – but who can sleep for 12 hours every day – i work for 10 then travel on top.

  • Lolly Says:

agreed. I can’t sleep 12 hours..actually, I dont even sleep 8. Usually I only get about 6 or 7, maybe on the weekends i’ll get more. But, if I sleep less than 6 I get the twitch bad. And I take sleeping meds, which I think make the twitch worse. I am convinced they screw up everything in your body…but I cant really sleep w/out them :( so I screwed

  • JEssica Says:

After 10 days I am finally free!!!!!!!! Could have been that I started to drink a lot more water and take a multivitamin! All I can say, is YEAY!!!!!!!!

  • lOLLY Says:

Must be nice to have it go away after doing something that only takes common sense. Mine’s been gone about a month…but before that I tried it ALL! I still feel it slightly when I sneeze or squeeze my eyes shut or not get enough sleep one night. I get paranoid its going to come back. Drinking lots of water and taking a multivitamin should be done at ALL times with or without a twitch. It keeps you healthy..and we all wanna be healthy, right?? Drink water and ditch the caffeinated drinks..they are bad for you. TROY – How U doing? PUll out the muscle yet ;)

  • troy Says:

hopefully tommorow night – going for a drink or two.i’ll get the muscle pulled out :) .till then still twitchen

Will you please delete about 7 recent posts from a Troy, Dee and friends, all probably from the same person. This immature youth does not have the intelligence to realise what a social crime mocking the blind, or any eye condition patient is. EW England.

Obviously not to much intelligence in england. No one on this site is blind.Do you even know what an eye twitch is? This above is the worst post yet. Wake up and smell the TEE AN TOOST.

  • DEE AND FRIENDS Says:

ya, you have way too much time on your hands, ‘moderator delete 7 posts’. Where are you coming up with this stuff? Mocking the blind, people w/ eye conditions..no one is doing that. Wake up and smell the coffee. No one’s posts are going to be deleted, because no one is wrong – but YOU.

I’d recognize that dry, classless wit anywhere, it’s our “resident downer” still sucking the life out of this forum. If the moderator should do anything, it’s ban the English from posting. You clearly have nothing positive to contribute and seem to be hated by all. Cheerio!

  • Darren Says:

I was able to get to the post about sticking your finger in your right ear and closing your eyes and doing deep breathing for 15 minutes before I started crying from laughter. I love it. I have had ‘the twitch’ for about a week – the worst part is that I developed it 10 minutes before going on a job interview. And the girl who interviewed me was absolutely gorgeous – which made it even worse. I have a second interview with the company tomorrow, and so far – no twitches today. I am PRAYING that it stays at bay for at least the next 24 hours. But this has been the greatest comic relief for a problem that I’ve ever found. God bless you crazy twitchers – one and all. I am bookmarking this page for anytime I need a good laugh. ‘the twitcher’, ‘the winker’…LOLOLOL.. Jesus Eye-twitching Christ – I am literally crying….lol. Thank you!!!!

  • Evan Says:

What a great site. may it live on for a while. I’ve had the eye twitch going on for a month and a half. Optometrist said it was a stye and too keep contacts out, warm compress on it, and it would “eventually” go away. After trying that theory out for 2 weeks, and nearly scolding my face with hot water several times, I’ve decided to go back to contacts. Besides that, I’ve cut caffeine intake in half, gotten 7-8 hours of sleep, and exercised at least 3 days a week. I was considering trying another doctor, but after reading everyone’s posts don’t see the point. It’ll go away eventually. I’ll just keep coming back here for a good laugh! Thanks everyone :)

What an interesting read, I just wanted to put in my little bit about eyelid twitches. I have suffered with chronic bilateral ( both eyes ) , upper and lower lid spasms for quite some time.

I have read several blogs about this condition, and its quite interesting, for most people its just a transient ( temporary) ailment due to stress or lack of sleep or both. I dont think it is really that diet related unless you have blood test clinically showing you are defficent in vitamin B12 or magnesium.

However in other people the condition becomes chronic, I beleive this is due to a very mild nerve irritation possibly due to damage caused by a virus.

A good example being viral encephalitis, where people can recover to 99% of their former health but are left with sub clinical neurological deficits.

Anyway, eyelid twitiching ( myokymia ), in chronic form its quite a rare clinical manifestation.

There has only been one really well done scientific study on this peculilar ailment. The study which the full text viewed at http://www.jneuro-ophthalmology.com/pt/re/jneuroophth/abstract.00041327-200412000-00003.htm;jsessionid=GnyP7KvcyCN7pg9kVq0fmxbHzpCvBwNtJctrGQT3vW2pQ2gQKmzT!-1754492629!181195629!8091!-1

The reassuring thing is that the twenty patients that were reviewed over a period of 20 years, eyelid myokymia was not the first sign of any serious neurological disease .

    It says

Results: In all patients, symptoms began as unilateral, weekly or biweekly, intermittent eyelid spasms, and progressed to daily spasms over several months. The mean duration of symptoms at first examination was 91 months (range 2.5 months to 20 years). In no patient was the myokymia the first manifestation of a neurologic disease, although one patient progressed to ipsilateral hemifacial spasm. Thirteen patients (86.7%) underwent neuroimaging that gave negative results. The myokymia resolved spontaneously in four patients. Of the remaining 11 patients, eight were treated with botulinum toxin injection at regular intervals, with most reporting an improvement in symptoms.

In summing up, realisitically the only effective treatment for chronic eyelid myokymia is botox.

I can confirm this myself , as magnesium and other natural remedies did nothing.

Contrary to what most people think, botox treatment is extrememly safe if administered by an opthomologist.

In cases where botox hasn’t worked, people have actually had their eyelid muscles surgically altered.

    Anyway…..hope this helps

Good info, and stories. Funny how a little spew on a website genarates so many hits. Well, I too have had the Twitch in the lowerleft eyelid as well. Hope it clears up soon. I had a splinter of metal removed from my eye like a week before it started, so I thought it may be related. but the chiropractor may be in the future. Cant hurt right?
Good luck you crazy son of a twitches.

  • Mina Says:

    Hi Everyone,

I have had an eye twitch for a few weeks now, right under my right eyelid. During this time I have also suffered two very bad migranes (one of which is just starting to ease up, hence the 12:45 pm post). I have been doing a lot of research and speaking to various doctors and I have disovered three possible treatments. First you should try changing your pillow/sleeping position/bed (if possible). This is because the most common cause seems to be pinched nerves in the neck, back, and shoulders. By sleeping with a different pillow (like a one of those ergonomic foam ones), you can reduce the strain these areas of your body. The next step would be to visit a Chiropractor, for the same reasons as above. Seeing a physical therapist might also help. They would be able to give you some stretches that could help the tension in the back and shoulder region). You can also try Feldenchrist (sp?) which is sort of like physical therpy, but more relaxing. Getting some more exercise can also help the condition, as long as it is not overly exhaustive. It will loosen up your muscles and allow for less tension (but make sure to stretch afterwards). Finally, the last resort seems to be botox, though I have not tried it. I hope all of my efforts at least help someone!

Now I wish this migrane would go away!

  • stacey Says:

i guess i’m not alone. my under eye twitches on the right side (in the dark circle area) and it originated right after my son was born in June of 06 and everyone said it would go away when i started getting a good night sleep again. eventually it did….but its baaaack. even though i sleep pretty good now… my anxiety level is very high though- and i think its a combo of anxiety and caffeine. yeah, i should probably just stop drinking it all together and get on something for my anxiety, but do i have to? just to get rid of this annoyance! i don’t feel it, but its very noticeable when you look at me.

    :(

  • hamilton Says:

I have had an eye twitch for nearly 9 months now and yes, it’s driving me crazier than I normally am! Eye doctor has me on drops which aren’t helping. His next step is to send me for a shot of Botox. This isn’t an option so I hope it stops soon on it’s own. I am stressed and don’t sleep well…Sneezing sets it off too. I also go to a chiropractor regularly ….hmmm

  • gumix_davao Says:

these are cool postings.. hehe..having same experiences with the irritating eye twitches .. got mine few weeks earlier, i think it started when i drank too much strong coffee on the seminar.. i was just thinking to see a doctor before ive seen this blog..i guess i need to stop drinking coffee for awhile. i hope it stops because it really adds up to the stress!

  • sports2712 Says:

When I get stressed I tend to pull out eyelashes fruquent. I recently have been trying to stop because it has become so noticeable that people are making coments about my missing eyelashes. Last week I pulled out one and have had a consistant twitch in my right eye for the past week. I want to know if there is anything I can do to stop this annoying twitch?

  • applecider Says:

Wow! so happy to find fellow twitchers here. I’ve been so worried about my left eye twitching for weeks and thinking to see a doc. Before that I decided to do some research first and bumped into here.
I guess it may be related to stress as the past month I had been rushing for a prototype which turned out to be failure. Then these 2 weeks I’m getting insane preparing for a speech contest, practising like hell…
But maybe I’ll still see a doctor anyway hopefully he’ll give me some time off from work :p

  • Laura Says:

Under my left eye has been twitching pretty much non-stop for a week. I am always stressed out and suffer from depression but this is the first time I had a problem with twitching. The only time it stops temporarily is after I take a warm shower. Then it comes back within an hour. My hands are also sore. Am I dying?

  • Mateen Says:

Okay, I have had a cold now for about 2 or 3 weeks and the eye twitching happens periodically all day long. My work involves staring at the computer screen so I am sure this is a contributing factor, along with other common poor health symptoms like work stress, lack of sleep and sleeping late. But just right now, i sneezed and my eye has twitched again, rapidly, about 20 times! I came online looking for a solution and that led me here to Jason’s blog.

I have a favour to ask, Jason, can you please Highlight or put a page just for the eye twitching cures. This would be extremely helpful and will definitely push your blog tally to over 2000 viewers. Thanks.

My lower right eye has been twitching for a week. It is so annoying! Can in be related to birth control pills???

  • Victoria Says:

I have had a twitching sensation the past few days on the lower part of my right eye. I am being treated for glaucoma in which I take medicine eye drops in only the right eye every day. I will call eye doctor to find out if this has any relevance to the glaucoma or possibly the eye drops. Since I have the glaucoma and am diabetic it does concern me and I will notify the doctor. I know that a twitching of the eyelid is usually a sign of being tired, but my problem is only the right eye and the lower part. I also only administer the eye drop to the right eye once a day. It’s not constant but it has been happening on and off for a couple of days. I have also had a few headaches which I don’t usually get very often. I also recently started on Lantus which is insulin for diabetic control.

  • Chronic Sufferer Says:

    Some good news:

I read on the Internet about Cyclosporene Oitment and the Cauterisation of the tear ducts into the nose channel. [Do a www search] I was so impressed I had it done. The improvment was about 90%. The twitching is caused by inflamed nerve ending and inflamed tear duct ducts, The oitment cured this and took away the mild persistant pain. The cauterisation meant what tears I had did not drain away so quick, so my eyes were not so dry. All I now need to do is wipe my eyes daily with a wet, soaked in lukewarm water, cotton-wool pad to remain virutally sympton free. To recap diet aid/s did not help, nor did 3 years of Botox. The cause is a virus and the complaint is Blepharitus causing the tear ducts to partially close. Its incurable. Your eye moisture level is the key to any cure and washing your eye-lid-line area firmly each day kills billlions of germs. Extra natural tears helps – so, my thanks to the Surgeon for closing my tear drainage ducts. 90% cured I am, after 15 years of seraching.

About a year and a half ago I got a charlie horse in the back of my right thigh so bad I thought I was going to die in the middle of the night. Then from that moment on I had strange aches that moved around my body constantly also body spazms everywhere day and night! That went on for about 9 months. Then more symptoms came! Tingling in my feet and weird sensations. I was very depressed and had visited many doctors who had told me it was depression that was doing these things to me and they tried to give me anti depressants like crazy! All they wanted to do was get me out of there offices as fast as they could!! They never wanted to figure out what was wrong with me and treat it! all they wanted to do was mask the pain! Then I went to a Neuroligist and he told me that it was stress or coffee!! I began getting dizzy spells and nothing was getting better! I gave up and just waited for death or what ever was to come!! Then the pains stopped amd the spazms came way less frequently till they stopped! I was happy for about 5 months! Now I have constant eye spazms! I read that people have had them for weeks but I have had them almost constantly for 3 months!! I would rather have them then the pain but most days I feel like cutting my eyelids off!!! It isnt exactly an eye spazm but more of a small cramping or tightening of the muscles around the eye! Im not going to the doctors because they will give me the same speech that Im not sleeping right or that Im not eating right!! I am an electrician and when I have a problem in my job like for instance if a light isnt working in a home and the home owner comes to me for help! I try to trouble shoot and fix the problem any way I possibly can! I take pride in what I do and if I didnt I shouldnt be doing it! So when the light needs to be fixed I dont tell the home owner that he or she should just buy I lamp for that room because it will be easier for me! NO! I fix the light one way or another!! I know that the humanbody is much more advanced than a simple light, but there only concern is how fast they can get you out the door!! I would have no problem if they would put some effort fourth! Its there job! Thanks for listening!

  • Informal Advice to last post. Says:

Your eyes are tightening and clamping in order to squeeze out some oil from your MEIBOMIAN GLANDS [found in your uppper eyelid magins] What tirggers of the squeeze muscle – shut eyes mechanism is poor tear film. Do google search on tear film, dry eye, blephaorospasmn, and top tear glands and bottom tear glands. Most people don’t know one produces oil, the other water, and the mixing takes place on top of your eyeball. Poor oil. means a blink, an wipe, and a squeeze.

Your cramps and legs, you have lack of vit A and VIT D. so some Cod liver oil and youre on a teaspoonful a day now for life. Miss 3 days and the problems re-occurs. so test me, miss 3 days and see what happens, do a google search for Restless Leg Syndrome. All you describe happens in men and women over 50, with 52 being about the time it starts. As you can guess I’ve got it, and your reading 13 years new on me. Vit A and Vit d, and don’t sit over a fire – this can dry eyeballs out, result Mr Germs move in, they love dry-eyeballs. And Botox is useless. Been there-done that, and good luck.

  • Chris James Says:

I`ll try your advice! I`m only 25 and I guess I should take vitamins! I just dont see how these things just instantly happen one day! I fel that i is something much more serious like MS! but I have had a MRI and the doctor told me that there was no scaring in my brain or spinal chord that would indicate it! I just feel like the pain and muscle spazms allover will return! Thanks though I`ll tell you if your advice works!!!

I just happened by since my right eye’s been twitching for 5 days now… really feels like a Twitchers Annonymous site now, not Jason’s intention, but it’s doing some good.
Chris James- If there’s actual PAIN asociated with your spasms, please look up Charcot-Marie-Tooth, my best friend had painful spasms for most of her life and doctors wrote her off till finaly one of them got it right. It might be worth a look for you.
As for mine, i think i’m just over-tired and stressed out. My bf of 2 years dumped me, i’m in college and my midterms are the end of the month AND i have to move the end of the month AND AND AND… *sigh*
I’ve always had painful leg cramps, twitches, and hiccups randomly throughout life. Other than 4 days of hiccups, I’ve never had a twitch for more than a few hours. Reading this site makes me feel a little more normal tho. Helps seeing that in print, I guess. :)
Oh no! My left eye just twitched!!! AGGGG!!! Make it stop!!! >,
