My Most Popular Post – Eye Twitch?

A few weeks ago I installed a WordPress plugin that will list the most popular posts on your blog based on post views. The numbers it reports are as of the time it was installed. My most popular post was one I almost didn’t write. I was experiencing an eye twitch for a prolonged period of time, and I felt the need to vent about it a little bit. As it turns out, in the past three weeks, that post has been viewed more than 1380 times, which is more than double that of my next most popular post. The Eye Twitch post also has 128 comments on it as of the time I write this, which is far more than any other post here.

This makes me wonder if there’s a real need for people with eye twitches to have a site that would allow for a community to thrive where people can support one another and help to collect information about this affliction. Since I really have no desire for this blog to become a touchstone for the eye twitch community, it makes sense to try to redirect the energy that is going into all of the wonderful comments on that post to a more appropriate forum. I’ll have to work on that.

What strange things we learn when we start posting personal gripes for all to see! :-)

That’s too funny! I found your blog because of an eye twitch which I’ve had for 3 days now. I’m glad it’s a minor thing and not impending nerve degeneration of something.

But yes, maybe someone should start a BB support group for eye twitch sufferers.

hey my name is megan, its about 7 am on tuesday the 7th. I have not been able to sleep all night long. My eye has been twitching for 5 days now straight. I decided since i could not sleep, to flip the laptop on and do some research about my damn eye.. and is this normal?? if so can i do anything about it.? well i searched through some pages, and i almost didnt read it because it showed up only in html code. Well i figured i would still read through and see there are basically no “cures” this is normal. i agree with you dr’s dont know what the hell they are talking about. i am from san diego, and came up here to nor cali gilroy. as soon as i got into gilroy, this horrible horrible twitch came over my left upper eye lid. RIGHT ON THE LID. it bounces around so crazy, if i pull out a mirror real fast and look at it my whole left eye is bouning around.
It has only been getting worse. today is day number 5, it will twitch really erratically for 5-10 sec. 5 secs is bad but 10 secs, make me just stop whatever i was doing to attend that. on the first day i experienced it was pretty consistsnt through out the day. straaaange…
but then over the next few days its to the point where when it twitches it out weighs when it doesnt twitch. its the worst !!! and very trouble-some. what if this does not go away? am i just going to have to deal with it? its like the itch on your palm or the bottom of your foot. its that fucked up nose hair that grows in askew. its just the worst!

    My dear friends
This twitching can be reduced to bare minimum without taking any medicine

What you have to do is
    1. Put your ring finger in the right ear tightly so that nothing can be heard thru it. breath deeply by closing your eyes for about 15 minutes. u can practice as much as possible intervels. By closing right ear & eyes more flow exists towards left eye which makes eye nerves set to adjust themselvs.
    2. Don’t take coffee, cool drinks, lemon
3.eat a banana and wash face more frequently
Reply me if u have any clarifications

Well, I think I rank right up there at the top of the “Twitchiest Eye” contest. My lower right eyelid has been twitching constantly for 5 WEEKS!!!. I wake up to a constant twitch, I spend my day with an eye twitch, and I go back to bed and sleep with a twitch. People say, “Surely you’ll get used to it.” I don’t want to get used to it!!! I want a cure! I have been to 5 different doctors– a opthamologist, 2 neurologists, one QUACK chiropractor, and (the latest), a chiropractic physician who specializes in reflexology. The most recent doc. has actually given me hope for the first time. He did tests with my reflexes that neurologists never even mentioned. They wanted to cut my eyelid open and perform a butcher session that takes a year to recover from or resort to Botox which potentially would paralyze my eyelid. Long story short- the chiropractic physician fixed my eye twitch in 24 hours!!! I had an adjustment of my second vertebrae and the twitch went away after twenty-four hours. Turns out, I had a pinched nerve. I also had/have a cranial fault. Google it if you’re curious. It was NOT the result of stress, fatigue, low potassium or caffiene as most websites and doctors seem to believe. I ate more bananas and B vitamins than anyone should in a lifetime.
I write this post for those out there who feel as frustrated at the medical profession as I do. Chiropractors have been stereotyped as quacks, and I’ve even been to one in my search for a cure. Find a REAL one who is a liscensed Physician. It has made all the difference in the world.

  • Jason Says:

Wow Katie, thanks for the very illuminating post – this is the first really new information we’ve had here on possible causes of twitches in awhile. I suspect pinched nerves and misalignment could be a very overlooked cause of this problem. Thanks again!

  • Barbara Says:

wow! it’s amazing to read everyone’s experiences with eye twitches. I’ve been annoyed w/ it coming and going for appx two wks now. it’s real distracting! I think it’s stress related for me, but I know I get plenty of sleep.
I think I’ll try more water and less caffeine. the pinched nerve idea is interesting, but I am not comfortable w/ chiropractors, so not willing to try that yet.

  • Joyce Says:

  • Jennifer Says:

So nice to feel like I’m part of a support group of sorts…man, my eye has been twitching on and off for about 3 weeks. Definitely stress related so I have a hard time with the chiropractor idea too. I started a new day job and its soooo hard to concentrate with it. A loved one just went through a bad spell and I just made a major move out of state…and getting into a house that needs too much repair and carrying two mortgages. First time in years working full time day job. It all started about three weeks ago with two back-to-back out of state trips too. Yes stress related! AAACKKKK!

  • hope Says:

ok…my eye twitches and then my eyebrows start twitching…… so. people call me the “TWITCHER”..and I am famous…so, I’m thinking of going on Oprah..or maybe Dr. Phil….. so.if any eyebrows or eyes are twitching..(and they have stopped) let me know the secret. I think we all need to get together and go on T.V. or we can have our own eye twitching show….lol

  • jessica Says:

my eye twitched for like a month and a half!!!! at first i thought it was stress….then i just realized that i was craaaazy thats why my eye twitches!!! so if yours starts twitching again maybe you should seek psyciatric help… much love, jess

  • iris Says:

Is it better to not wear contacts if you’re having eye twitch issues?

  • sam Says:

Katie you may be right about the vertebrae causing the twitch. I have had “the twitch” in my lower left eyelid for about 3 weeks now, and just realized that exactly 3 weeks ago, my back locked up on me at work. So, I have had soreness in my back for the 3 weeks as well as the eye twitch problem. Think I will have to call on my chiropracter friend before I go crazy and tear my eye out. Thanks for the comments.

  • julie Says:

thank god I found a normal posting site that doesn’t spew out the same stupid info on eye twitches. my lower right eyelid has been twitching for the last 4-5 weeks. it is driving me crazy. i can’t see how it is stress related because i am a teacher and just finished up the school year. i also am not a coffee drinker and drink some tea but only one cup at the most a day. i am an excellent sleeper so i really think that the advice on these webistes is bogus. i guess i will wait to see how annoyed i can get before doing something about it. i do know now not to waste money on going to the doctor if they aren’t going to have any answers for me. so please keep posting your findings people. we eye-twitchers are on our own!

    June 26, 2006

I am so glad that I researched enough to find fellow eye-twitchers. I have suffered off and on since May, 2006. I tried potassium, B-12, Calcium, no caffeine and I am not sure which worked, but I have been twitch-free since June, 2006. Oh, I have an occasionaly twitch, but it lasts for 5-10 seconds and then it goes away. Before my twitches ended, they were constant, 24-7 and I thought I would go crazy. I was about to call a neurologist when I found this website and other similar ones that let me know I was not alone. I was terrified that I had some sort of incurable disease or something. I needed some support and found it here. I don’t believe that it is caused by stress, lack of sleep, etc., because I was getting plenty of sleep and was not stressed.

  • Karin Says:

O.K. so, have you noticed that the twitching has increased (or, at least people looking it up has increased) in June…. allergies…??? Anyway, I’m in the same boat as the rest of you- my upper right eye lid has been twitching for a month- about every 15 minutes. If I close my eyes tight- I can cause it to twitch (lovely. I have a chiropracter and will tell her about the second vertebrae and the cranial fault (crack in the cranium… :) ???) mentioned by Katie on May 17th. I’ve never- ever had an eye-twitch situation like this before- and, I’m quite tired of it.

  • Michelle Says:

wow.. who would have t hought that a twitch in ones eye would have generated so much discussion. Im learning heaps, thanks every one. I too have had a twitch under my right eye. Its driving me nuts (to say the least).. MIchelle (Bundaberg Australia)

  • Susie Says:

    Hey fellow Twitchers,
I posted my twitch back in June (post numbers 373 and 381) My twitch was gone in a few days but I kept this Blog on my desktop and read it periodically. I find it interesting and some of you twitchers are hilarious with your wording, I mean that in a feel good way.(Utah, Wilson post 433) I laughed out loud with your comment about your Mom,(still giggling) everyone in the office heard me.
I can empathize with all of you twitchers, as I feel I am a recovering eye twitcher, because you really never know if you will fall off the eye twitching wagon again…

  • Kathy Says:

I have been twitching for two months now. I tried a drug called Herbal Nerve from Shoppers drug mart.. I still have the twitch but if i take this stuff every four hours its keeping the twitch at bay, let me know if it works for you.

  • kathy Says:

hi, my lower right eyelid has been twitching almost constantly for over two months now. I saw my eye doctor and got glasses, he said my eyes were just “tired” and the twitching would go away. Well two months later and no change. So for the past two weeks i’ve been taking this herbal drug from Shoppers drugmart called Herbal Nerve it seems to help for about 4 hours, then i have a slight tremor that reminds me to take somemore. Just wanted to help you all, its a stress headache medicin thats working for me. Good luck to you all. Hold out from stabbing your eyes out for another day, there is hope!

I have had it before on rare occasion with someone having a indepth conversation, or via someone trying to pry information about my life that i dont feel like giving out. But that only lasted for seconds. Yesterday i got it Around 10 and it lasted till i went to sleep at 12. Or at least thats until sometime in my sleep. Today i get to work and Its back 4 hours into my shift. Great i hope im a 3day experiencer and not 5 weeks to months. How can i be confident lookin in someones face with my lower lid actin crazy?

  • Arlene Says:

    Hey fellow-twitchers!!

Well, just like the way you have been trying to find out bout eye-twitching..same goes with me, that’s how i landed here!

My right eye has been twitching on and off since the past month.
But i agree that its bcoz of stress, coz i sleep for jst 4hours a day.

Would also like to share this: in the olden days, some indians used to say that if the eye twitches (right eye for a female, left eye for a male) something good is goin to happen! Dont really know how far it’s true.. bt as for me, whenever my right eye twitches, good things have been happening :)

    Cheers!

Eye twitch – the reason it started twitching for me was when I started using a new acne topical treatment. Anyway I’ve stopped applying it to my face now and the twithing is gone! So maybe your twitching is also due to some change such as the use of a new face cream, eye cream, that is too strong, allergic etc. Find out the trigger and go from there. :-)

Hi. I’ve had my twitching for about 2 weeks now, and its kiling me and switching from eye to eye every day. its messing up my money flow because i’m a waitress and do not like to take orders while my eye is twiching. Its embarrassing feeling people are staring at my eye. I make less money because I choose to take less tables. i’m ready to try everything, and thats what I’m going to do. ANYTHING!!!! Botox even…. fist i plan on trying the little things like herbal nerve, and vitamins, and all that. We shall see…

My eye has now been twitching for about 5 days! On and off, but only in the outside corner of my right eye. so I guess that isn’t that bad in comparison to a lot of you here. I appreciate everyone’s suggestions, I think I will head to the chiropractor tomorrow. I will let everyone know if that works for me! glad to know I am not alone in twitchiness…

  • Georgina Says:

Man this is so funny, I’m right now on the computer looking at info about a twitching eye and i found that I’m not the only one with this problem, my eye has been twitching for a week non stop everyday at different times is just so awful, anyway I’m relieve that is not that serious thanks for all comments.

i like your page very much!~!!

  • Marti Says:

Reading everyones comments made me realize that I have stopped going to my chiropractor for some time. I use to go twice a month for a tuneup so to speak. Chiropractic is the answer, I believe for many eye twitching issues, but you must find a good one. Don’t knock it if you haven’t tried it. If you go to a reputable one, you will have the practice explained to you and realize that it makes sense. Regular doctors put it down because it takes money out of their pockets.

  • Kathleen Says:

Well, all of your comments have been helpful. I visited this blog because of my son-in-law’s recent development of an eye twitch which involves his whole eye. It really bothers me to see him having this problem because he never has and it distorts his whole face – not ugly mind you. I’ve had my own problems with twitching for many years. It comes and goes and usually involves only the upper or lower lid. Sometimes it goes on so long and fast that I no longer notice it. In fact just the other day, I was surprised to look in the mirror and see a lower lid constantly twitching. I do believe spinal issues, stress, depression, and possibly fibromyalgia are contributing problems. I have at least one of these issues daily. I’ve been trying to check into Trigger Point therapy in addition to Chiropractor therapy. The new breed of Chiropractors are very beneficial. My chiropractor offers massage therapy as part of his treatment plan. I experienced my first trigger point therapy in the lower back just recently. I’ll need to mention the eye twitch and see what trigger points the massage therapist suggests. Good luck to you all.

I cant believe how many people have this annoying problem. My right eye started twitching a long time ago on and off. Cant even remember how far back it started. Then, about 6 weeks ago it was non stop. This past week my other eye has decided it will compete with its mate!!!… for heavens sake.
OK, seriously, it is so annoying. I also have terrible bad headaches on and off lately..
Having looked up this condition the possible causes are quite alarming…. so far i’ve found i could have a brain tumour, multiple schlerosis, developing blindness… oh the list goes on… i;m worried sick about it. I worry so much in case of a stroke…
Thank heavens i’ve found this site…
i’ve now decided to give up coffee, as i drink this in large quantities.
Looking forward to reading some more from all you other “twitchers” out there…
On a funnier note… i might even get a tee-shirt printed… “DONT FLATTER YOURSELF, I HAVE A TWITCH, I’M NOT WINKING AT YOU”
    take care all..

  • Donna Says:

Hi, Jason, and the rest of you with twitchy eyes!

I first got it about 10 years ago during my university final exams, and it annoyed the pants off me! It’s been intermittent since with no apparent cause that I can find. I am not stressed, I sleep like a baby and it started up again in my upper right eyelid with a vengeance about a week ago. It’s not really bothering me but my family now treat it as my party trick!

Arlene, in post #21 mentions the folklore about eye-twitching: I read years ago in a paranormal/Fortune magazine that the Chinese had all sorts of twitches and itches mapped to fortune. I was actually looking for that when I found this site! Mind you, this is more enlightening! If I find anything, I will post it – unless someone else has.

Doctors here in England tend to put everything down to stress, so I won’t be visiting one about this unless my sanity suffers!

I’ve had a twitch under my right eye for the past 5 weeks. Arghh. I used to get this years ago and I went to reputable opthamologist /plastic surgeon and he administered botox. Botox worked wonders and had no side effects. The twitch would stay away for months and would only flare up if I went running alot. Now I’m pregnant and don’t want to risk that. I’ve tried accupuncture and it kinda works. It takes the twitch away immediately, but only for a few days. Looking for a natural cure. Anyone?

  • Gisele Says:

Exercise is the only thing that made my eye twitch go away…

  • Tommy Says:

I started getting the twitch in my upper right eye lid in the past few weeks. I ignored it for a while then got annoyed and actually turned my attention to it. I’m thinking it’s stress because I work full time and a lot of overtime and in the time frame I also began full time school again. But at the same time it could be the vertebrate explanation I’ve been seeing because my job is pretty physical and I have been putting more stress on my back then I used to, I’m still not sure but this page has certainly given me more knowledge then I began with. Keep it up twitchers.

  • Lewis Says:

Hello to all fellow eye twitchers:
Both my lower eylids have been “twitching” daily for the past three years. It is an affliction I have not yet come to terms with. Like many twichers, I have run the gamut of self help and the assistance of the medical profession with little success. I’m trying acupunture now with some minor results. I do feel cursed and this limits me from participating fully in living life, i feel I’m getting “ripped off” of living. The one thing that bothers me the most about this eye twich is this: when I’m in a conversation with someone and I feel the spasms come on the reaction I get from the person I’m conversing with is the rubbing of thier own eyes, confirming, my wretched disease.

Does anyone have any advice for living with this condition so you don’t go mad until a real remedy comes along? I’d like to hear from people who suffer and try to deal with it so they don’t feel like outcasts? My next solution is to wear permanant sunglasses-even at night. Best to all.

  • Boni Says:

Of all the bad press surfing the Internet gathers, one good thing is you look up oddball things to find you are not alone!

I have a twitching right eyelid for the past 6 months and just yesterday it decided that twitching every 15 minutes is not enough. I’d like to torture my victim and twitch every 2 seconds!! My eyelid is possessed!

Really, I think it has worsened due to (1) stress, which I have been under way too much….job, personal, money….you name it and (2) I spend way too much time on the computer, like 16 hours a day. I run 2 businesses that require constant PC use, and on the side I do PC repair and am on the run when my businesses shut at 5pm. Screen flicker kills me too.

And to add to my difficulties, I have had both eyes flashing for the past year, nothing to do with the twitch, but I have posterior vitreous detachment…scary but liveable as long as I’m not in total darkness, like driving at night, sitting in a dark room, going up a dark staircase.

See, everyone……it COULD be worse! I wish it were just the twitch I had.

Well, today I have decided, as someone suggested above, sunglasses seems like a nice disguise! At least my dog doesn’t notice it!

  • Jo Says:

    Boni
You are so funny, thanks for making me laugh. It does seem like our eye lids are possessed, and I to wear dark glasses when out in public. I’ve been twitching since 1999.I’ve done so much research on the subject and what I have found is, some people get the twitch as a symptom of terrible diseases, most never know why. Doctors don’t have a clue most of the time, they insist you are tired or depressed. Most of us are depressed because we twitch and people look at us funny, we don’t twitch because we are depressed. They can treat the twitch with Botox injections, which does work, they can operate on the nerve but if they screw up it’s forever. This is why they call it a Medical Practice, they are practicing! the best advice is learn to live with it and pray it goes away. Of course you should always go to the Dr. to make sure it’s not a terrible disease but it sounds like you did that. Your sence of humor will help, don’t get to depressed about it, like you said it can always be worse. I’ve never heard of a posterior vitreous and I’m going to look it up when I’m done here, sure doesn’t sound like fun. Keep laughing. One of my standing jokes is when someone gets on my nerves I take off my glasses and tell them they are making me twitch, I usually get a laugh, others go away, makes me laugh.

I’ve had the twitch underneath my right eye for about a week now. It’d been driving me nuts, but then this morning I woke up and the twitching had stopped! Hi everyone, its Hazel again. The eye has finally stopped twitching!!! yipee! After 2 weeks. My cure may possibly have been… Two brilliant nights out (with quite a lot of malibu & lemonades drunk!!)and two days holiday off work..the day before i went back to work, my eye had stopped. (touch wood, touch wood, touch wood,)So rest, have some fun & drink!!

  • Rob Says:

My left side hemifacial spasm has finally subsided…it is almost gone. It has taken just about 2 months. What a relief!! However, I now seem to have random twitching all over my body. It is irregular; but appears to be growing in frequency.

Who knows what’s going on! My neurologist says I might have had a virus that damaged my nerves. MRI scans showed nothing abnormal in my brain. He says I don’t have ALS (extremely doubtful)…thank goodness. Hopefully, this all goes away like a bad dream.

Some things I have done – not sure if they helped – but it gave me comfort that I was doing something: 1) B-12 vitamin, 2) Calcium, and 3) Potassium. Also, I have destressed myself. Stress was crazy with me…. I also had Xanax on stand by for those super stressed out moments.

  • Tara Says:

Hi, I have had a twitch for about 3 days now. First started under my left eye. No relief, constant twitch. It is the strangest feeling. Feels like there is a worm wiggling in my eye. And today, day 3 I felt a sharp pain under my other eye. Thought ohhh no! Went to look in the mirror and now the right under eye is twitching too. I am going to make an appointment for deep therapy massage, it may help. I am always having pinched nerves from lifting my kids. Will find out and let you know!!!!

  • Jo Says:

Just an update. I’m still twitching. I started in 1999. Why can’t they find a real cure? I did Botox, bee stings in the face, that was not fun, then I couldn’t close my eye for two weeks. Made taking off my make up very difficult. I don’t want brain surgery, I just want the thing to stop moving at the speed of light.

    I feel better, thanks.
