There’s Something Funky with the RSS of Scoble’s new Linkblog

[Updated Below] I just tried to manually subscribe to Scoble’s new linkblog in NewsGator, but I received the following error message:

—————————
Error loading feed.
—————————
An error occurred loading this feed. Please check the URL and try again.

Details: The URI prefix is not recognized.
—————————
OK
—————————

That sucks.

Of course, then I tried to click directly on the link to the RSS feed, and NewsGator dutifully subscribed to it. Why the heck couldn’t I enter the URL manually?

[Update] It struck me as odd that NewsGator subscribed to the feed when I clicked on the feed’s link, since I expected to see Firefox’s standard XML display of an RSS feed. Then I remembered that some people have been championing the use of the feed: protocol prefix to denote RSS feeds. Sure enough, that’s how this link is set up. So it looks like an update is in order for NewsGator, to fix this little gaffe. [End Update]

Anyhow, it’s nice to see Scoble’s using the very gorgeous Kubrick theme that I love so much. What’s not so cool is that he’s not crediting the design anywhere on the main page. The stock template has a link to Michael (the author of the theme) Heilemann’s Kubrick page in the footer which it appears that he’s removed. For shame, Robert.

Actually with the nightly builds (WP 1.5) the Kubrick theme is the default, and the link to the author has been removed. Scoble didn’t remove it, it’s simply not there….at least it wasn’t in the 1/21/05 build I downloaded the other day.

Thank you – that’s good to know. I guess now I don’t have to worry about breaking my theme when I upgrade, but at the same time it sucks to go from having one of the nicest looking (IMHO) WordPress sites to one that looks like a standard out of the box site.

All in all, I think it’s a smart move to use Kubrick as the default style. It surprises me that Michael Heilemann’s credit has been removed though!

Actually it’s a standard practice. Once the theme comes packaged with the software the credits are removed. WordPress can be used for business purposes and out of the box, the link should not be there, but it is in the code which matters.

Your theme shouldn’t break when you upgrade because 1.5 accepts both theme sets. However, if you want to move to the new version (which is lovely – not having to worry about the theme breaking when upgrading) you need to save your stylesheet, sidebar and header graphic. I “think” there are some tutorials on this but if not, if you need help send me an email and I’d be happy to try and help. It’s pretty easy once you get the hang of it. :)
